ARK Investment Management, founded and managed by Cathie Wood, is an investment management firm based in New York City that manages the largest actively managed exchange-traded fund. ARK focuses on investing in disruptive technology, such as AI, DNA sequencing, robotics, and EV. The firm invests in companies it predicts to double in value over a five-year period. This strategy intends to achieve outsized returns; however, it is extremely risky in its nature.
Ray Dalio founded Greenwich, CT based hedge fund Bridgewater Associates in 1975. The success of the fund made it the largest in the world and its founder, Ray Dalio, a world-renowned finance guru and one of the richest people in the world.
Ray Dalio focuses his overarching investing strategy on making use of diversification with uncorrelated assets to lower the amount of risk he takes to achieve his outstanding return. Broadly speaking Ray Dalio is a ‘macro investor’. That means he makes his investment based on a view about the economy.
Icahn Capital Management
Carl Icahn is an activist investor. He takes minority stakes in public companies and typically pushes for change. We track all the stocks owned by Icahn Partners. Mr. Icahn has a personal wealth of $17 billion. He buys beaten-down assets that nobody else wants, usually out of bankruptcy, then fixes them up and sells them when they are back in favor. Regarding his style, Icahn explains that consensus thinking is generally wrong. "If you go with a trend, the momentum always falls apart on you. So I buy companies that are not glamorous and usually out of favor. It is even better if the whole industry is out of favor."
Sachem Head Capital
Sachem Head Capital Management is a value-oriented investment management firm based in New York City, managed by Scott Ferguson.
Ferguson, a protégé of Bill Ackman at Pershing Square Capital Management, founded Sachem Head in 2012. The name derives from Sachem Head, an overlook in the Pocumtuck Range in New England. According to Fortune, Ferguson "tends to be less combative than other activists."
Abdiel Capital Advisors
Abdiel Capital Advisors is based out of New York. Abdiel generally invests in publicly traded companies that are likely to gain market share over long time periods. They prefer businesses that have recurring revenue and that are managed by people with a large share of their net worth in the stock. The value companies by estimating the return a company’s cash flows would deliver to someone who bought the entire business at the available stock price and held it permanently.
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Trust
Bill Gates is one of the smartest businessmen in the world. He founded Microsoft and grew it to the world’s largest software maker and monopolized the PC world. Bill Gates was the richest man for 15 consecutive years. Warren Buffett once said that Bill Gates can do what he does and he cannot do what Bill Gates does. Bill Gates now sits on the board of Berkshire Hathaway, and owns a few percent of Berkshire shares.
